Training Workshops on HIV and AIDS Manual

Incorporating HIV and AIDS in the adult education curriculum

The Ministry of Education’s plan to introduce HIV and AIDS as a subject in the school curriculum is a welcoming move. Children need to be alerted about the pandemic at early age, if Namibia wants to reduce the HIV and AIDS among its youths. This effort to sensitise our learners about the disease did not leave out Adult learners in the Directorate of Adult Education under the Ministry of Education.

The Directorate of Adult Education has now also joined the initiative to alert its Adult learners about the pandemic.

Training workshops were conducted in various regions, namely the Omusati, Oshana, Kavango, Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Khomas as from 15-24 April 2007, more specifically on how the District Literacy Officers can use the training guide on HIV and AIDS during Literacy programmes. The aim of these workshops was to produce trainers who can provide information on HIV and AIDS to our adult learners during literacy classes.

The training covered the following: Basic in-depth knowledge of HIV and AIDS; Anti-retroviral (ARV) treatment; learning how to facilitate issues on HIV and AIDS using adult learning principles, skills on how to use the training manual on skills integrated HIV and AIDS education and Desert Soul-HIV/AIDS.

The HIV and AIDS training manual will soon be distributed to all thirteen regions for literacy classes.
