EduSector Health DayMinistry of Education Minister, Hon. Nangolo Mbumba

The Ministry of Education launched the EduSector Health day on the 20th July 2008

at the Ongwediva College of Education in the Oshana Region. The day, which was celebrated with numerous cultural performances, was attended by hundreds of teachers from Oshikoto, Oshana, Ohangwena and Omusati regions. The Minister of Education, Honorable. Nangolo Mbumba who was the keynote speaker said that the event is the first of 13 celebrations, which will be held for all the 13 regions.

 

The objective of this day is:

  1. Ø      To create an urgent awareness and nurture an understanding of voluntary HIV/AIDS testing and counseling as well as the major contribution every Namibian can make to national development;

  2. Ø      To change attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and general health in the education sector, as well as to create urgency by educating and delivering knowledge, in an engaging, captivating and fun way and

  3. Ø      To provide and encourage the uptake of voluntary testing and counseling for all education sector employees.

Workshop on the Review of the Draft Relief Teacher Strategy and Development of an Implementation Plan for the Workplace HIV and AIDS Policy for the Namibia Education Sector

A workshop took place at Walvisbay from 30th June until 4th July 2008 aimed at reviewing and revising the draft Relief teacher Strategy, developing a plan to implement the workplace HIV and AIDS policy, to priorities activities for the regions and to adopt the planning instruments and reach consensus on the next steps forward. The Workplace HIV and AIDS Policy for the Education Sector drafted by the Ministry of Education via its HIV/AIDS Management Unit (HAMU), collectively with its stakeholders in July 2007 has reached an advance stage through the implementation plan of the Workplace Policy. LUX Development Donates Books and Electronic Equipments worth more than N$ 2 million

The Regional Representative of LUX Development, Mr. Paolo Cervino handing over the donations to the Director of National Libraries and Archives Services, Ms. Veno Kauaria. Looking on is Mr. Elia Manga, NLAS Deputy Director, and Ms. Chipo Toto, Operations Officer for LUX Development.   

The Luxembourg Agency for Development Cooperation (LUX Development), donated library books, computers, electronic equipment and library furniture to the Ministry of Education on 14 February 2008. The donated goods are earmarked for 11 schools in the Caprivi and Omaheke regions.  

The donation goods are valued at 200 000 EURO (approx, N$ 2 232 080). The 11 schools were selected by LUX Development in consultation with the Ministry’s Directorate of National Library and Archives Services (NLAS).  

The goods will only be delivered to the schools once the conditions of the libraries at the selected schools are assessed, then refurbished and furnished if necessary in order to ensure the safety of the books and the equipment. 

 


MINISTRY OF EDUCATION RECEIVES ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENTS FROM USAID BES 3 PROJECT

Mr. Todd Malone of BES 3 Project handing over the laptops to Mr. Enssle, Chief Inspector.The Ministry of Education received a donation of 6 laptops and 10 digital cameras from the USAID Basic Education Support (BES) Projects while the Ministry provided 5 laptops, files and stationary to the NESE teams.  

The electronic equipments were handed to the Ministry on 01 February 2008. 

They will be used by the Ministry’s National External School Evaluation (NESE) Team Leaders during their visits to schools in the regions to carry out external school evaluations which started in March last year and will continue every year with selected schools in all regions.  

The NESE aims to help schools identify their strength and weaknesses through the National Standard and Performance Indicators for school in Namibia and work on the latter to improve the quality of education at the schools.  

According to Mr. Alfred Ilukena, Under Secretary for formal Education at the Ministry of Education, it is best for the Ministry to identify its own deficiencies in order to enable schools and the Ministry at large to plan more efficiently.  Read more....


Award by the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL)  

The Ministry of Education signed an Accreditation Agent Agreement with the ICDL Foundation of South Africa in 2006. The aim is to have all school leaving learners, qualified in the ICDL to ensure that Namibia has an ICT literate population which is in line with Vision 2030. Read more....


Dr. Matsepe-Casaburri’s visit

Dr. Matsepe-Casaburri’s visit was aimed at seeking support from Namibia to work collaboratively with other SADC member states to pull together resources to improve the education of the African child as well as developing ICT’s in the SADC community.

Training Workshops on HIV and AIDS Manual  

Incorporating HIV and AIDS in the adult education curriculum

The Ministry of Education’s plan to introduce HIV and AIDS as a subject in the school curriculum is a welcoming move. Children need to be alerted about the pandemic at early age, if Namibia wants to reduce the HIV and AIDS among its youths. This effort to sensitise our learners about the disease did not leave out Adult learners in the Directorate of Adult Education under the Ministry of Education. Read more...


ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUBJECT MATERIALS LAUNCHED

The Ministry of Education recently launched the subject and promotional materials for the Entrepreneurship subject. This new subject will be introduced in all schools next year (2008) starting with Grade 5 and Grade 8. Read more....

The Ministry’s partners in this project are Bank Windhoek , Shell Namibia , Namibia Association of Norway and the United Nations Industrial Development Fund.


ECB donates to ETSIP

The Electricity Control Board donated N$ 20 000 the Ministry of Education’s ETSIP programme.

The donation is part of the N$ 50 000 pledged at last year’s Roundtable Pledging Conference. The rest of the pledge will be paid out of the next three years.
